We are pleased to announce that researchers from our Institute have received funding for two NCN grants in the Opus 29 competition.
– Ewa Maj, PhD, from the Laboratory of Experimental Anticancer Therapy – NCN Opus 29 grant in consortium with Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (leader): “Application of Griesbaum Co-ozonolysis in the Synthesis of Iron-Sensitive Conjugates of 1,2,4-Trioxolanes as Anticancer and Antiparasitic Agents,” grant amount PLN 2,104,650. The aim of the project is to create new chemical compounds that will act on both cancer cells and malaria-causing parasites. The grant is expected to result in the discovery of new molecules capable of killing treatment-resistant cancer cells by inducing ferroptosis, the invention of malaria drugs that are effective even against resistant strains of parasites, and the construction of chemical “building blocks” that will form the basis for many new drugs in the future. This will allow for the introduction of safer alternatives to the toxic drugs used today to treat parasitic diseases.
– Marta Sochocka, PhD, DSc, from the Laboratory of Virology – NCN Opus 29 grant in consortium with Wroclaw Medical University (leader): “Building cognitive and brain reserve: the trajectory of protective and risk factors in a longitudinal cohort study of the Polish population,” grant amount PLN 2,802,204. The aim of the project is to clarify the unclear processes associated with cognitive decline, with particular emphasis on the middle-aged population in Poland, by identifying key risk factors and protective factors affecting cognitive functions and brain structures. Thanks to advanced data analysis techniques, it will be possible to discover the mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and to identify effective prevention strategies and programs. On a national scale, the project is pioneering—it is the first population study of such a broad scope and methodological sophistication, focusing on CSVD and dementia in a non-geriatric population.
Congratulations!
