The subject of Saturday’s feature on Dzień Dobry TVN was Ludwik Hirszfeld, a Polish immunologist and pioneer in blood group research. The report on the patron of our Institute highlights the enormous impact his research into blood groups had on the development of medicine. It was he who introduced the designations A, B and 0 and, together with Emil von Dungern, proved their heritability. Before Hirszfeld’s discoveries, blood transfusions were unpredictable and often ineffective; thanks to his work, they became a safe, life-saving procedure. Hirszfeld’s research enabled the development not only of modern transfusion medicine but also of blood banks.
