Prof. Andrzej Górski, a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and head of the Department of Phage Therapy and the Bacteriophage Laboratory at the IIET PAS, celebrated his 80th birthday in August this year. On this special occasion, the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Marek Konarzewski, sent a letter of congratulations to the honouree, in which he expressed his appreciation for his many years of scientific, academic and organisational work.
Prof. Andrzej Górski’s body of work is inextricably linked to the development of modern immunology and medicine, with research into bacteriophages and their application in the treatment of bacterial diseases occupying a special place in his scientific work. His research has contributed to the development of innovative areas of research and therapeutic methods, earning recognition within the international scientific community as well.
His work, however, extends far beyond his research achievements. For many years, Professor Górski was associated with the Medical University of Warsaw, serving, amongst other roles, as its rector. He was also actively involved in the Polish Academy of Sciences, including as its vice-president, helping to strengthen the Academy’s position and shape its role in Polish scientific life. A special place in his extensive career is occupied by the Ludwik Hirszfeld Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with which he has been associated for many years. Between 1999 and 2007, he served as Director of the Institute, playing a significant role in its scientific and organisational development. To this day, he remains actively involved with the IIET PAS, heading the Bacteriophage Laboratory and continuing his scientific work in a field that has long been one of his primary areas of research interest.
Another key area of the Professor’s work is his commitment to the ethical dimension of science. His long-standing involvement in promoting research integrity and responsibility, including his leadership of the Commission on Ethics in Science, represents a significant contribution to shaping ethical standards within the Polish scientific community.
The Professor’s academic achievements and work have been recognised and honoured on numerous occasions. Among his many distinctions are the Knight’s Cross, the Officer’s Cross and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, as well as an honorary doctorate from the Wrocław Medical University.
Professor Andrzej Górski’s achievements extend beyond his publications, research, positions held and awards. They also encompass his many years of mentoring successive generations of doctors and scientists, as well as his commitment to the development of the institutions with which he has been and remains associated. His work stands as an example of how scientific research can be combined with a sense of responsibility towards the academic community and the development of the entire discipline.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, we extend our warmest congratulations to the Professor and express our appreciation for his achievements and the entirety of his long-standing scientific and academic work. Above all, we wish him good health, prosperity and cheerfulness, as well as many more years of creative activity, satisfaction with his achievements to date, and unceasing scientific curiosity and inspiration.
