Hubert Kasprzak, MSc, guest on Polish Radio RDC

We are pleased to announce that Hubert Kasprzak, PhD student at the Bacteriophage Laboratory, was a guest on the Polish Radio RDC program “Pan od Przyrody” (Mr. Nature) on Sunday, December 7. In reference to the recently celebrated Barbórka, the topic of the program was coal. The first guest talked about the differences between natural and synthetic diamonds, while our doctoral student described the impact of bacteriophages on carbon storage in soil.

Carbon is a biogenic element, and life on Earth is based on carbon. Bacteriophages, as predators that feed on bacteria, limit their population. They are therefore very important for the environment and influence the carbon cycle in nature. Bacteriophages are the most numerous group of organisms in the world. By killing bacteria, they prevent them from breathing and thus from emitting carbon dioxide, so they do not contribute to the greenhouse effect.
