Innovative biomaterials for the treatment of chronic wounds – research by the IIET PAS presented at ESB 2026

The European Society for Biomaterials Conference 2026 (ESB 2026) took place in Antwerp, Belgium, from 7 to 11 September 2026. Felipe Martínez Ramírez, PhD, from the Group of Biological Activity Studies of Medical Biomaterials, led by Honorata Kraśkiewicz, PhD, attended the event thanks to an Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC) Conference Grant awarded under the COST ESENBURN Action.

Felipe Martínez Ramírez, PhD, gave a presentation entitled ‘Polydopamine-functionalised electrospun PCL/PLA/PEG scaffolds for sustained biomolecule delivery in advanced wound dressing systems’, in which he presented the results of research into a new generation of materials for the treatment of chronic wounds.

The electrospun polymer membranes under development are capable of storing and gradually releasing molecules with regenerative potential produced by mesenchymal stromal cells. Modifying the material’s surface with polydopamine has extended the release time of biological factors from a few hours to several days, creating a promising platform for future multifunctional wound dressings that support tissue regeneration, that could support tissue repair while eventually incorporating future antimicrobial strategies like bacteriophages.

The presentation of the results at ESB 2026 provided an opportunity to showcase the research carried out by IIET PAS to an audience of international experts and to exchange experiences regarding the development of advanced biomaterials for medical applications.
