Prof. Krzysztof Kałwak, PhD, DSc – Head of the Department of Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation, Oncology and Haematology at the Wrocław Medical University

  • Author and co-author of over 400 full-text publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Total Impact Factor > 1070, Hirsch index 32 (Web of Science)
  • Chair of the Paediatric Diseases Working Party (PDWP) at the EBMT
  • Co-Chair of the Scientific Council of the EBMT
  • National coordinator for the treatment of congenital neutropenia within the SCNIR (Severe Congenital Neutropenia International Registry) and chronic myeloid leukaemia in children
  • Vice-Chair of the Polish Paediatric Haematopoietic Cell Transplantation Group

Achievements:

  • Certification of the centre for CAR-T therapy in November 2019, which led to the first use of this innovative technology in a paediatric patient in Poland (March 2020). Since then, over 50 further patients have received this therapy
  • Principal investigator at the clinical centre belonging to the EU RECOMB consortium, which is introducing autologous gene therapy using modified haematopoietic stem cells to treat patients with RAG1-SCID (first patient in Poland and Europe outside the Netherlands – in October 2024; subsequent patients received the therapy in 2026)
  • Team coordinator who performed the first transplants in Poland for metabolic disorders and certain rare primary immunodeficiencies in children
  • 18th place in the prestigious ‘Puls Medycyny’ poll – the ‘List of 100’ most influential people in Polish medicine in 2025
