An expert in the fields of transplant immunology, regenerative medicine, and stem and cancer cell biology. She currently heads the Laboratory of Biology of Stem and Neoplastic Cells at the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IIET PAS) in Wrocław, where she also serves as Vice-Chair of the Scientific Council (term 2023–2026). At the upcoming conference, she will act as one of the event’s hosts, as well as a speaker and panellist in the section dedicated to targeted therapies.
International Experience and Pioneering Research:
She gained her research experience at prestigious centres abroad. Between 1998 and 2002, she collaborated with the INSERM Institute Paris-Sud sur les Cytokines in France. A key stage in her career was her time at the Cleveland Clinic (USA) between 2003 and 2009, where she participated in pioneering research into face and limb transplants, which was of groundbreaking significance for reconstructive medicine.
Key Scientific Achievements:
- Oncology and Targeted Therapies: She has conducted research into the mechanisms underlying the development of graft-versus-host disease following haematopoietic cell transplants, and into the identification of biological markers in lymphomas and solid tumours. Her work has contributed to the development of new strategies in cancer immunotherapy (including the use of the immunotoxin WPD101a).
- Innovative Research Models: She has developed technologies for creating organoids from cancer cells, which serve as modern models for testing anti-cancer therapies.
- Regenerative Medicine: She leads preclinical research into the potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).
International Recognition:
She has been recognised in the prestigious ‘World’s Top 2% Scientists’ ranking for 2024, placing her among the world’s most influential scientists. She is the author of over 130 international publications and has secured 29 research grants (including 14 in the USA).
Social and Local Government Activities:
Since 2024, she has served as Chair of the Committee on Immunology and the Etiology of Human Infections at the Polish Academy of Sciences. She is also an active member of numerous scientific societies, including the Polish Society for Experimental and Clinical Immunology, the Polish Transplant Society, and the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society (TERMIS). For her scientific work, she has been honoured with awards from, amongst others, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare and the Polish Transplant Society.
